Sony MAX was a general entertainment television channel that was available in South Africa, primarily through the DStv satellite television platform. Owned and operated by Sony Pictures Television (SPT), a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, the channel launched on 1 November 2011.
The channel replaced ActionX, another general entertainment channel, and was positioned to offer a diverse range of programming. Its content slate included a mix of international movies, series, reality shows, and sports programming, often with a focus on action, drama, and male-skewing content. Sony MAX aimed to provide a broad appeal to South African audiences, showcasing content sourced from various international distributors, including Sony's own library.
Sony MAX ceased broadcasting in South Africa on 31 October 2013, when it was replaced by the Sony Channel. The Sony Channel continued to carry a similar mix of entertainment programming before it too was eventually phased out or rebranded in subsequent years as Sony Pictures Television restructured its global channel offerings.
