Sonny Shroyer (born August 28, 1943) is an American actor and former country music singer, best known for his portrayal of Deputy Enos Strate on the television series The Dukes of Hazzard (1979–1985).
Early life and education
Shroyer was born in Valdosta, Georgia, United States. He attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a bachelor's degree in theater. During his college years, he also performed as a singer with a local country music group.
Acting career
- Film: Shroyer made his film debut in The Last of the Mohicans (1970). He subsequently appeared in a variety of movies, including The Last Picture Show (1971), The Midnight Hour (1985), and Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 (1983).
- Television: His most prominent role was as Deputy Enos Strate on The Dukes of Hazzard, a part he played for the series' first five seasons. The character was spun off into the short-lived series Enos (1980), in which Shroyer starred as the titular character. He later returned to The Dukes of Hazzard for guest appearances during the series' final season and reprised Enos in the 2005 film adaptation. Additional television credits include guest spots on Matlock, Murder, She Wrote, Magnum, P.I., and Walker, Texas Ranger.
