Songs for Drella

Songs for Drella is a collaborative studio album by American musicians Lou Reed and John Cale, released on February 13 1990 by Sire Records. The work functions as a tribute to the late pop artist Andy Warhol, whose nickname "Drella" (a contraction of "Andy" and "Cinderella") serves as the album’s title. It marked the first official musical partnership between Reed and Cale since their departure from The Velvet Underground in the early 1970s.

Background and conception

Following Warhol’s death in 1987, Reed and Cale, both former members of The Velvet Underground, decided to honor his influence on their artistic development. The two musicians composed and recorded the album over a period of several months in 1989, primarily at the Power Station studio in New York City. The project was produced jointly by Reed, Cale, and the engineer Shelly Yakus.

Musical composition and lyrical themes

The album consists of twelve tracks that blend elements of art rock, avant‑garde, and spoken‑word performance. Reed provides most of the lead vocals, while Cale contributes vocals, keyboards, piano, and viola. The lyrical content reflects Warhol’s persona, artistic philosophy, and the cultural milieu of the 1960s and 1970s, with songs such as “A Dream” and “Style Wars” offering narrative recollections, and “Songs for Drella (The Three Ravens)” showcasing a more experimental, spoken‑word approach.

Release and reception

Upon its release, Songs for Drella received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its lyrical depth, the collaborative dynamic between Reed and Cale, and its respectful homage to Warhol. The album charted modestly in the United Kingdom and the United States, and it has been retrospectively regarded as a significant entry in both artists’ discographies.
