Early Life and Education
Sone Lal Patel was born on 2 July 1950 in Bagulihai village, Manda tehsil, in the [[Allahabad district]] (now [[Prayagraj district]]) of [[Uttar Pradesh]]. He completed his M.Sc. in Physics and later earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences. Before entering full-time politics, he served as a professor at the [[Allahabad Agricultural Institute]] (now [[Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences|Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology & Sciences]]).Political Career
Patel began his political journey in the late 1980s, associating himself with the [[Bahujan Samaj Party]] (BSP) under the leadership of [[Kanshi Ram]]. He was considered a close aide and confidant of Kanshi Ram, playing a significant role in the early expansion of the BSP in Uttar Pradesh.However, due to ideological differences and disputes over party functioning, Patel eventually parted ways with the BSP. On 4 November 1995, he founded his own political party, the Apna Dal (meaning "Our Party"). The party's core ideology centered on social justice, advocating for the rights and representation of marginalized communities, particularly the numerically significant Kurmi caste and other OBCs in Uttar Pradesh.
Under his leadership, Apna Dal established itself as a regional force, often aligning with larger national parties to contest elections. The party gained a dedicated support base, especially in the Purvanchal (eastern Uttar Pradesh) region.
Death and Legacy
Sone Lal Patel died on 17 October 2009 in a road accident near [[Kanpur]], Uttar Pradesh. His untimely demise left a void in the leadership of Apna Dal.His political legacy has been carried forward by his family, particularly his daughters. After his death, the Apna Dal party experienced internal divisions. His elder daughter, [[Anupriya Patel]], currently leads one faction, [[Apna Dal (Sonelal)]], which has become a significant ally of the [[Bharatiya Janata Party]] (BJP) in Uttar Pradesh and at the national level. His other daughter, Pallavi Patel, leads another faction, [[Apna Dal (Kamerawadi)]]. Sone Lal Patel is remembered as a pioneering leader who gave a distinct political voice to the Kurmi community and other backward classes in Uttar Pradesh.
