History

The area where Solnechnogorsk now stands was first mentioned in historical records in the 15th century, then known as Gomzino (Гомзино) or Senezhskoye (Сенежское). By the 18th and 19th centuries, it had developed into the village of Solnechnaya Gora. Its strategic location on the vital road and railway connecting Moscow and Saint Petersburg contributed significantly to its growth.

In 1928, the settlement was renamed Solnechnogorsky and granted the status of an urban-type settlement. It officially attained town status and its current name, Solnechnogorsk, in 1938. During World War II, Solnechnogorsk experienced a brief occupation by Nazi German forces from November 23 to December 13, 1941, during the critical Battle of Moscow. It was subsequently liberated by the Red Army.
