Solca Wielka (Polish pronunciation: [ˈsɔlt͡sa ˈvjɛlka]) is a village in central Poland, located in the administrative district of Gmina Ozorków, within Zgierz County, Łódź Voivodeship. It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) north of Ozorków and 18 kilometres (11 mi) north-west of the regional capital, Łódź.
History
The village was first mentioned in the 12th century as a property of the Archbishops of Gniezno. During the tenure of Archbishop Ostrowski, the leaseholder of the Tumski estate (which included Solca Wielka) was Jan Stokowski, the heir of Sierpow. In 1799, the village became property of the Prussian government and was incorporated into the state-owned Krzepocin estate. In 1827, it was a village of the government of the Kingdom of Poland.
Administrative divisions
From 1975 to 1998, the village was administratively part of the former Łódź Voivodeship. Following administrative reforms, it has been part of the Łódź Voivodeship in its current boundaries.
Etymology
The name "Solca" likely originates from former salt works in the area. Research has confirmed the presence of salt deposits and specific halophytic (salt-tolerant) vegetation in the vicinity.
Present day
Solca Wielka is home to the Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński Primary School (Szkoła Podstawowa im. Konstantego Ildefonsa Gałczyńskiego w Solcy Wielkiej), which serves the local community.
