Solandra is a genus of flowering plants in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. It comprises about 10 species of large, woody vines or sprawling shrubs, native to tropical regions of the Americas, from Mexico to South America and the Caribbean.
Description: Solandra species are known for their striking, large, trumpet-shaped flowers, which are typically golden yellow, cream, or white, often fading to a darker yellow or purple as they age. Many species are highly fragrant, especially at night. The flowers can reach up to 10-30 cm (4-12 inches) in length and width. The leaves are typically simple, alternate, and ovate to elliptical. The plants are vigorous climbers, often growing extensively over support structures or as large sprawling shrubs in open areas.
Habitat and Distribution: These plants are primarily found in tropical and subtropical forests, often in mountainous regions. Their native range extends from Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies south to parts of South America.
Cultivation and Uses: Due to their showy flowers and vigorous growth, several Solandra species, particularly Solandra maxima (chalice vine or cup-of-gold vine), are widely cultivated as ornamental plants in warm climates around the world. They are often grown on pergolas, trellises, or walls, where their large flowers can be admired. They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil.
Toxicity: It is crucial to note that all parts of Solandra plants are highly toxic if ingested. They contain tropane alkaloids, similar to those found in Datura and Atropa belladonna, which can cause severe anticholinergic poisoning. Symptoms of poisoning can include hallucinations, dilated pupils, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and convulsions, and can be fatal. Due to their toxicity, they should be handled with care, and kept away from children and pets. Despite their toxicity, some indigenous cultures historically used Solandra species in traditional medicine or as hallucinogens, often with highly dangerous results.
