Association with the Chōsokabe Clan
The Chōsokabe clan (長宗我部氏), a prominent samurai lineage from Tosa Province (modern Kōchi Prefecture) that rose to power during the Sengoku period, used the variant 宗我部 of the Sogabe surname. The most famous member, Chōsokabe Motochika (1539–1599), unified Tosa and much of Shikoku Island. After the clan's defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), surviving members often reverted to the simpler Sogabe surname.
