Softcult is a Canadian musical duo from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 2020. Comprising twin sisters Mercedes Arn-Horn (vocals, guitar) and Phoenix Arn-Horn (drums, vocals), the band is known for its distinctive blend of shoegaze, grunge, indie rock, and alternative rock, often characterized by dreamy vocal harmonies, fuzzy guitar tones, and socially conscious lyrics.
History
Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn previously gained recognition as members of the rock band Courage My Love. Following the dissolution of their prior project, the sisters formed Softcult during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, aiming for a more independent and creatively unconstrained approach to music. They quickly established a strong online presence, utilizing platforms like YouTube and TikTok to connect with fans and self-release their early material. Their debut EP, Year of the Rat, was released in 2021, followed by See You In The Dark (2022) and Heaven (2023), all under Easy Life Records.Musical Style and Themes
