Sofiivka Raion () was an administrative district (raion) of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine. The raion's administrative center was the urban‑type settlement of Sofiivka.
Geography
The raion was situated in the western part of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. It covered an area of approximately 873 km² and comprised a mixture of rural villages, small towns, and agricultural land.
Population
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, the raion had an estimated population of 17,100 residents in 2020.
History
- Establishment: Sofiivka Raion was established as part of the Soviet administrative system and continued to exist after Ukraine’s independence in 1991.
- Administrative reform: On 18 July 2020, the raion was abolished pursuant to a nationwide administrative‑territorial reform that reduced the number of raions in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast from twenty‑seven to seven. The territory of the former Sofiivka Raion was merged into the newly expanded Kryvyi Rih Raion.
Administrative divisions
Prior to its dissolution, the raion was subdivided into several local councils, including one settlement council (centered on Sofiivka) and multiple village councils overseeing the surrounding rural localities.
Legacy
Although the raion no longer exists as an administrative unit, the name “Sofiivka” continues to be used for the settlement that served as its centre, and the former raion’s territory remains a recognized geographic area within the larger Kryvyi Rih Raion.
