The men's giant slalom competition in snowboarding was one of two snowboarding events contested at the XVIII Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, from 8 to 9 February 1998. The event marked the debut of snowboarding at the Olympic Games.
Venue
The competition was held on the Mount Yakebitai course at the Kanbayashi Snowboard Park, a purpose‑built venue for the Games.
Format
The event consisted of two runs down a specially prepared giant‑slalom course. The combined time of both runs determined each competitor’s final standing. Riders were required to navigate a series of gates set at a greater distance than in a traditional slalom, allowing for higher speeds.

Controversy
Following the competition, Ross Rebagliati’s urine sample tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a metabolite of cannabis. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) initially stripped him of the gold medal on 19 February 1998. Upon appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled on 13 March 1998 that THC was not classified as a performance‑enhancing substance under the Olympic anti‑doping code at that time. Consequently, Rebagliati’s gold medal was reinstated, and the medal standings remained unchanged.
