"Small Town Story" (Chinese: 小城故事; pinyin: Xiǎochéng Gùshì) is a Mandarin-language song recorded by Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng (鄧麗君). It is best known as the theme song of the 1979 Taiwanese film The Story of a Small Town (小城故事), directed by Li Hsing (李行), and it ranks among Teng's most widely recognized recordings. The song is also sometimes rendered in English as The Story of a Small Town.
Background and composition
The lyrics of "Small Town Story" were written by Zhuang Nu (莊奴), with music composed by Weng Ching-hsi (翁清溪, also romanized Weng Qingxi). Arrangement credits are variously given to Weng Ching-hsi, or to Weng Ching-hsi together with Joseph Koo (顧嘉煇 / Gu Jiahui).
According to Chinese-language biographical accounts, director Li Hsing commissioned the theme song while preparing the film and engaged Weng Ching-hsi to compose it and Zhuang Nu to write the lyrics. Several singers reportedly declined the piece, considering its melody too simple and gentle to perform effectively. Weng Ching-hsi is said to have recommended Teresa Teng, describing her as a "professional singer" capable of handling the material; Teng agreed to record it.
Teng first recorded the song for the 1978 Taiwanese film The Story of a Small Town. The film was well received in Taiwan and won Best Feature Film at the 16th Golden Horse Awards, with Lin Feng-jiao (林鳳嬌) winning Best Actress and other awards for screenplay and child performance.
Release
"Small Town Story" was officially released on Teresa Teng's Mandarin studio album Love Songs of Island, Vol. 6: Small Town Story (小城故事), issued through Polydor Records on March 23, 1979. Sources differ slightly on the track's running time, citing either 2 minutes 36 seconds (English Wikipedia, citing AllMusic) or 2 minutes 39 seconds (Baidu Baike).
An alternate version of the song with different lyrics, titled "Spring Breeze Fills the Small Town" (春風滿小城), was also recorded by Teng and released on the same date.
Chart performance
From April 14 to April 29, 1979, the song is reported to have topped the Commercial Radio Hong Kong Chinese Song Chart for three consecutive weeks.
Reception
Chinese-language commentary, including an article in CTWant cited by Wikipedia, described "Small Town Story" as a "ditty" that is "full of national color, expressing the hardworking, hospitable and optimistic nature of Taiwanese people," and stated that "through Teresa Teng's gentle and sincere interpretation, the spirit of the song is brought out to its fullest." Baidu Baike similarly characterizes the song as imbued with traditional Chinese characteristics, praising Teng's "clear, gentle, and sincere vocal delivery" and describing the performance as exhibiting "sweetness within its steadiness and vitality within its gentleness."
Legacy and performances
"Small Town Story" helped Teresa Teng attract an international following. She performed the song at the Los Angeles Music Center in 1980, becoming the first Taiwanese singer to perform at the venue. She also included it in her 1982 Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth Concert and her 1983 15th Anniversary Concert Tour in Hong Kong.
The song became widely popular in mainland China after the Cultural Revolution and is counted among Teng's most famous songs. It has been covered by Asian musicians into the 21st century. Chinese singer-songwriter Cui Jian (崔健) sampled it on his song "Little Town Story V21-Part 1."
Notable later performances include a rendition by Wang Jing and Tong Yao at the 2013 CCTV Mid-Autumn Festival Gala, and a 2021 duet by Zhou Shen with a virtually presented Teresa Teng at the Jiangsu Television New Year's Eve Concert.
