Situated on the banks of the Slim River, the settlement derives its name from this watercourse. The town lies in the central western part of Peninsular Malaysia, approximately 80 kilometres north of the state capital Ipoh and about 40 kilometres south of Tanjung Malim in the neighbouring state of Selangor.

Administrative status

  • Country: Malaysia
  • State: Perak
  • District: Kuala Kangsar
  • Mukim: Slim

Geography
Slim is positioned at an elevation of roughly 30 metres above sea level. The surrounding area consists of undulating lowland terrain, interspersed with plantations, small hill ranges, and the main tributary of the Slim River, which ultimately drains into the Perak River basin.

History
The town developed during the British colonial period as a railway stop on the main line linking Kuala Lumpur to the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia. The establishment of the railway station in the early 20th century facilitated the growth of rubber and palm‑oil plantations in the vicinity, which became the primary economic activities. Historical records indicate that the settlement was known as “Slim River” before the shortened form “Slim” became common usage.

Demographics
According to the 2020 Malaysian census, the mukim of Slim had a population of approximately 33 000 residents. The community is ethnically diverse, comprising primarily ethnic Malays, followed by Chinese, Indian, and indigenous Orang Asli groups. The predominant languages spoken are Bahasa Malaysia, with Mandarin, Tamil, and various local dialects used within respective communities.

Economy
The local economy is centered on agriculture, especially rubber tapping, oil‑palm cultivation, and fruit farming (notably pineapple). Small‑scale manufacturing, retail trade, and services catering to the surrounding rural population also contribute to the town’s economic profile. In recent years, some residents have been employed in the nearby industrial zones of Tanjung Malim and the larger urban centres of Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur.

Transportation
Slim is served by the Slim Railway Station, part of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) network, offering passenger services between Kuala Lumpur and Butterworth. Federal Route 1, the historic north‑south trunk road of Peninsular Malaysia, passes close to the town, providing road connectivity to neighbouring districts. Local bus services link Slim with Kuala Kangsar, Tanjung Malim, and other nearby towns.

Education
The mukim hosts several primary and secondary schools, including national schools (Sekolah Kebangsaan) and vernacular institutions such as SJK(C) (Chinese) and SJK(T) (Tamil) schools. The nearest tertiary education institution is the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) campus in Kampar, approximately 25 kilometres to the north.
