Sladesville

Sladesville is an unincorporated community located in Beaufort County in the eastern part of the U.S. state of North Carolina. The community lies near the intersection of North Carolina Highway 306 and Slade Road, approximately 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Washington, the county seat.

Geography
Sladesville is situated within the Atlantic Coastal Plain region, characterized by low‑lying terrain, mixed pine forests, and agricultural lands. The area is part of the Pamlico River watershed, with several small creeks and wetlands nearby.

History
The settlement was named after the Slade family, early landowners in the region during the 19th century. Historical records indicate that a post office operated under the name “Sladesville” from 1852 until its discontinuation in 1966. The community developed as a local hub for farming, timber, and later, modest commercial activity serving surrounding rural residents.

In the early 20th century, Sladesville was incorporated as a town; however, the municipal charter was later revoked, and it reverted to unincorporated status. The former Sladesville High School, built in the 1920s, functioned as an educational institution for the area’s youth until its consolidation with larger county schools in the 1970s. The building subsequently served various community purposes before being abandoned.

Demographics
Because Sladesville is unincorporated, detailed census data are not reported separately; demographic information is aggregated within broader Beaufort County statistics. The surrounding region is predominantly White and African American, with a median household income below the state average.

Economy and Infrastructure
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture (including soybeans, corn, and sweet potatoes), timber harvesting, and small‑scale retail services. Transportation access is provided by state highways and county roads; the nearest major highway is U.S. Route 17, located several miles to the east.

Education
Current public education for residents of Sladesville is administered by the Beaufort County Schools district. Students attend schools in nearby towns such as Washington and Chocowinity.

Cultural and Community Aspects
The community hosts occasional local events tied to regional traditions, including church gatherings, agricultural fairs, and historical commemorations. The former Sladesville High School building remains a point of historical interest, though it is presently in a state of disrepair.
