Sky Angel

Overview
Sky Angel was an American media company that operated Christian‑focused television and radio services. Established in 1980 and headquartered in Naples, Florida, the company provided a mix of faith‑based and family‑friendly programming through satellite, over‑the‑top (IPTV) platforms, and later via partnerships with Dish Network. Its primary channels were Angel One, Angel Two, and Kids & Teens TV (KTV).

History

Early years (1980–1995)
Founded by Robert Johnson Sr., Sky Angel was created to offer a television service free of content the founder considered objectionable. The company secured allocation of eight direct‑broadcast satellite (DBS) frequencies and entered an agreement with Dish Network to transmit via the EchoStar III satellite.

Satellite service (1996–2008)
The satellite service launched in 1996, delivering a lineup of 36 channels (20 television, 16 radio) that emphasized religious and family‑oriented content. At its peak, Sky Angel reported approximately 115 000 subscribers, primarily in the central United States. In April 2008 the company discontinued the satellite service after deciding against a $400 million investment to replace the aging EchoStar III satellite, selling the DBS frequencies to EchoStar and encouraging customers to migrate to its IPTV offering.

IPTV transition (2007–2013)
In 2007 Sky Angel partnered with ShifTV to introduce an IPTV service in Canada, though the partnership dissolved later that year. A separate U.S. IPTV platform, developed with NeuLion, began in July 2007, providing a larger channel capacity and network DVR support. The service expanded to include “Faith Everywhere,” a web‑streaming option accessible via iPad and later Roku apps, and a secular spin‑off called FAVE TV (Family and Values Entertainment).

Dish Network exclusivity and cessation (2014–2019)
On 14 January 2014 Sky Angel halted its IPTV operations, citing an inability to secure nondiscriminatory carriage of its channels under existing FCC definitions of a multichannel video programming distributor. The company filed an FCC complaint alleging discriminatory practices by content providers, particularly Discovery Communications. Following the shutdown, Dish Network continued to offer the Angel channels within its family‑friendly packages until Sky Angel’s corporate dissolution in 2019.

Products and Services

  • Satellite service (1996‑2008): Monthly, yearly, or lifetime plans featuring 36 channels.
  • IPTV service (2007‑2013): Over 70 channels, with separate faith‑based, family, and combined packages; on‑demand video and radio.
  • FAVE TV: Secular, family‑oriented channel bundle launched as a spin‑off.
  • Partner distribution: Post‑shutdown, Angel One, Angel Two, and KTV were carried on Dish Network’s family‑friendly packages.

Legal and regulatory disputes
Sky Angel’s shift to IPTV prompted several carriage disputes. The company filed antitrust lawsuits against C‑SPAN and later against major broadcasters, alleging discriminatory refusal to provide programming. Courts dismissed these suits, finding insufficient evidence of collusion. A 2010 dispute with Discovery Communications also resulted in the removal of Discovery channels from Sky Angel’s lineup.

Defunct status
Sky Angel ceased providing television services in 2014 and dissolved as a corporate entity in 2019. Its legacy remains as an early example of a faith‑based, subscription television provider that transitioned from satellite to internet‑based delivery before exiting the market.
