Skinned Teen

Skinned Teen was a Japanese garage punk and riot grrrl band formed in Tokyo in the mid-1990s. Known for their raw, energetic sound, confrontational lyrics, and DIY aesthetic, they emerged as a significant act within the vibrant Tokyo underground music scene of the era.

History Skinned Teen was formed in 1994, consisting of three young women. They quickly gained a reputation for their fierce live performances and lo-fi recordings. The band's sound was heavily influenced by 1960s garage rock, early punk, and the contemporary riot grrrl movement originating from the United States, which championed feminist ideals and female empowerment in punk music.

Their early releases, primarily singles and EPs, were often issued on independent labels, both Japanese and international, including Sympathy for the Record Industry. They garnered attention from critics and fans of the garage punk scene globally, often being compared to bands like The Gories, The Mummies, and Bikini Kill. Despite their relatively short active period, Skinned Teen toured internationally, building a cult following. The band eventually ceased activity in the late 1990s, with members pursuing other projects.

Musical Style and Themes Skinned Teen's music was characterized by its stripped-down, aggressive sound. Their songs typically featured fuzzed-out guitars, driving basslines, simplistic but powerful drumming, and often dual or shouted vocals. Lyrically, they explored themes of teenage angst, rebellion, identity, and female defiance, delivered with a directness and intensity that resonated with the riot grrrl ethos. Their approach emphasized raw energy and authenticity over polished production.

Members While specific member names were not always consistently publicized in English-language releases, the core lineup consisted of three female musicians.
