The Skatestraum Tunnel (Norwegian: Skatestraumtunnelen) is an undersea road tunnel located in Bremanger Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It forms a critical component of County Road 616 (Fylkesvei 616), providing a fixed link between the islands of Rugsundøya and Bremangerlandet.
The tunnel was opened in 2002 as part of the Bremanger Mainland Connection (Bremangers fastlandssamband), a transport project designed to eliminate reliance on ferry services in the region. The tunnel has a total length of 1,902 meters (6,240 feet) and reaches its lowest point at approximately 91 meters (299 feet) below sea level. The roadway features a maximum gradient of 10 percent.
In July 2015, the tunnel gained international attention following a major industrial accident. A tank trailer carrying approximately 16,500 liters of gasoline detached from a truck and struck the tunnel wall, resulting in a massive fire and several explosions. While all individuals inside the tunnel at the time of the accident survived, the heat from the fire caused significant damage to the tunnel's electrical systems and structural shotcrete lining. The tunnel remained closed for several months to undergo extensive repairs and safety upgrades before reopening to the public.
