The settlement was first documented in the 12th century under the name Sittens, likely derived from a personal name Sitto combined with the Old Saxon suffix -en denoting a place. Throughout the Middle Ages, Sittensen was part of the Prince‑Archbishopric of Bremen. Following the secularisation of the archbishopric in 1648, it became incorporated into the Duchy of Bremen, which was subsequently ruled by Swedish and later Hanoverian authorities.
