Definition Sisupalgarh is an archaeological site located near Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India. It is believed to be the remains of an ancient fortified city dating back to the early historic period of the Indian subcontinent.
Overview Sisupalgarh is one of the few well-preserved early urban settlement sites in eastern India. Excavations at the site have revealed structural remains, fortification walls, gateways, and pottery, indicating its significance as an urban center during the late 1st millennium BCE to early 1st millennium CE. The site is situated on a low-lying laterite hillock and spans approximately 250 hectares, with impressive stone and earthen fortifications on multiple sides. It is often considered a potential candidate for being one of the earliest examples of a planned city in the region.
Etymology/Origin The name "Sisupalgarh" is derived from "Sisupala," a mythical king mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata, and "garh," which means fort in several Indian languages, including Odia. Thus, the name translates to "Fort of Sisupala." However, no definitive historical or archaeological evidence links the site to the legendary figure, and the name likely reflects local tradition rather than historical fact.
Characteristics The site is characterized by strong fortification walls made of stone and rammed earth, with bastions at regular intervals. Excavations have uncovered traces of residential structures, pottery, and other artifacts belonging to the Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW) culture, which is generally dated between 700 BCE and 200 CE. Four main gateways have been identified around the periphery, suggesting a planned urban layout. The site's strategic location near the confluence of several rivers and trade routes further underscores its historical importance.
Despite its archaeological value, Sisupalgarh has faced issues related to encroachment and urban development, prompting conservation concerns. It has been included in conservation initiatives by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and international organizations.
