Sipahiler
Sipahiler is the Turkish plural form of sipahi (from Persian: سپاهی sipâhi, meaning "soldier"), referring to the professional cavalrymen who constituted a core component of the Ottoman Empire's military forces from the 14th through the 19th centuries. The sipahi were divided into two main categories: the timarlı sipahi (provincial land-grant cavalry) and the kapıkulu sipahi (salaried palace cavalry). The timarlı sipahi held state-owned land tenures known as timar, from which they collected taxes in exchange for military service, equipment, and local security. The kapıkulu sipahi (Sipahis of the Porte) were elite household cavalry guards serving as the mounted counterpart to the Janissary infantry. The sipahi were equipped with weapons such as the kilij (sword), lance, composite bow, and shield, and their tactics involved fluid mounted warfare, skirmishing, and flanking maneuvers. The institution declined in the 17th–18th centuries and was formally abolished in the 19th century under Sultan Mahmud II, who replaced them with modernized cavalry divisions. The term spahi was later adopted by French colonial cavalry units in North Africa.
Sarıyahşi
Sarıyahşi is a town and the seat of Sarıyahşi District in Aksaray Province, located in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, approximately 110 km (68 mi) from the provincial capital of Aksaray. Its population was 3,543 as of 2021. The town lies near the Hirfanlı Dam on the Kızılırmak River, at an elevation of approximately 870–957 meters above sea level. The area experiences a continental climate, and the local economy is based on agriculture (wheat, barley, chickpeas, sugar beet) and livestock. The exact origin of the name "Sarıyahşi" is not definitively known, but according to the historian İbrahim Hakkı Konyalı, it derives from "Yahşi Han," a Turkish soldier who died in the area while passing through with his troops. The word yahşi means "beautiful" or "good" in old Turkic, so the name can be interpreted as "Sarıgüzel" (Yellow/Sallow Beauty). Sarıyahşi was a village under the district of Şereflikoçhisar in Ankara Province until it was granted town status in 1957 and became a district of the newly established Aksaray Province in 1989.
