Simon Goodell Griffin

Simon Goodell Griffin (January 21, 1820 – February 26, 1902) was an American lawyer, businessman, and politician who served as a Union Army brigadier general during the American Civil War and later represented New Hampshire in the United States House of Representatives.

Early life and education
Griffin was born in Greensboro, New Hampshire. He attended local schools before reading law and being admitted to the bar. He established a legal practice in Keene, New Hampshire, and became active in local business ventures, including manufacturing and banking.

Military service
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Griffin joined the New Hampshire militia, receiving the rank of colonel and being placed in command of the 13th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment in 1862. He led his regiment in the Department of the Gulf and later in the Eastern Theater. In March 1864, he was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers and commanded a brigade in the IX Corps, participating in operations around the Richmond‑Petersburg campaign. Griffin was mustered out of volunteer service in January 1866.

Political career
After the war, Griffin was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives, serving New Hampshire's at‑large district from March 1867 to March 1871 (Fortieth and Forty‑first Congresses). While in Congress, he served on committees related to military affairs and public lands.

Later life
Following his congressional service, Griffin returned to Keene, where he resumed his legal practice and expanded his involvement in manufacturing, railroads, and banking. He remained a prominent civic figure in his community until his death in Keene on February 26, 1902. He was interred at Woodland Cemetery.

Legacy
Griffin’s career exemplifies the post‑war transition of many Civil War officers into political and economic leadership roles during the Reconstruction era. His contributions to New Hampshire's military, political, and economic development are noted in state historical records.
