Common names
No widely recognized common name; occasionally referenced in the aquarium trade as a “Simochromis” cichlid.

Description
* Simochromis diagramma* is a relatively small to medium-sized cichlid, attaining a maximum standard length of approximately 10–12 cm (4–5 in). The fish displays a laterally compressed body with a silvery to grayish base coloration. Distinctive vertical or diagonal dark bars run across the flanks, giving the species its specific epithet “diagramma,” which denotes a marked, diagrammatic pattern. The dorsal fin is continuous, and the anal fin is elongated, typical of many Lake Tanganyika cichlids. Fin coloration is generally translucent with occasional faint reddish hues along the margins.

Distribution and habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, one of the African Great Lakes, situated along the borders of Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, and Zambia. S. diagramma inhabits the rocky littoral zones of the lake, favoring shallow waters where boulders and crevices provide shelter and breeding sites. It is most commonly recorded along the lake’s eastern shorelines, though precise locality records vary among field surveys.

Ecology and behavior

  • Diet: Primarily algivorous; individuals graze on periphyton and microscopic algae growing on rock surfaces. Opportunistic ingestion of small invertebrates has been observed.
  • Reproduction: A substrate spawner; breeding pairs excavate shallow depressions or use existing crevices for egg deposition. Both parents exhibit biparental brood care, defending the clutch and fry from predators.
  • Social structure: Typically observed in small aggregations; territorial behavior is exhibited by breeding pairs, especially during the spawning season.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not evaluated Simochromis diagramma as a separate species; it is generally considered part of the broader Lake Tanganyika cichlid assemblage, many of which are listed as Least Concern due to the lake’s extensive habitat. However, localized threats such as shoreline development, pollution, and overfishing could impact populations. No specific conservation measures have been documented for this species alone.

Human use
* S. diagramma* is occasionally kept in the ornamental aquarium trade, prized for its distinctive bar pattern and manageable size. Collection from the wild is limited and regulated in some regions to mitigate impact on natural populations.
