Biography and Career
Silvio Messaglia established Cascina Ca' Rossa in 1985, building upon his family's long-standing tradition of grape growing in the Roero. From the outset, Messaglia dedicated himself to showcasing the unique potential of the Roero terroir, a region often overshadowed by its more famous Piedmontese neighbors, Barolo and Barbaresco. He focused primarily on the region's indigenous grape varieties: Arneis for white wines and Nebbiolo for red wines.Under Messaglia's leadership, Cascina Ca' Rossa has become a benchmark for quality and authenticity in Roero. He is renowned for his unwavering commitment to sustainable and organic viticultural practices. His philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and the distinctive sandy, fossil-rich soils of Roero to express themselves fully. He is known for eschewing aggressive modernization in favor of methods that respect tradition while embracing careful, quality-driven innovation.
Beyond his winery, Messaglia has been an influential figure in the broader Roero wine community. He has been actively involved in the Consorzio Tutela Roero (Consortium for the Protection of Roero wines), working tirelessly to elevate the profile and quality standards of the region's wines, particularly after the establishment of the Roero DOCG status in 2004. His pioneering efforts have played a crucial role in solidifying Roero's reputation as a distinct and high-quality wine-producing area within Piedmont.
Winemaking Philosophy
Messaglia's winemaking philosophy centers on the belief that exceptional wine originates in a healthy vineyard. He prioritizes vibrant soils and robust vines, often allowing native yeasts to carry out fermentation. His wines are celebrated for their purity, elegance, and faithful representation of the Roero landscape. He is particularly esteemed for his interpretations of Roero Arneis, which often exhibit remarkable complexity and longevity, and his powerful yet refined Roero Nebbiolo, which reflects the finesse inherent in the Roero's unique expression of the grape.See Also
