Sikao district (Thai: อำเภอสิโกสร้าง) is an administrative district (amphoe) of Trang Province in southern Thailand. It is situated on the Andaman Sea coast and shares borders with the districts of Kantang to the north, Wang Wiset to the east, and the Tanintharyi Region of Myanmar to the west across the sea.
Geography
Sikaao district covers an area that includes coastal plains, low‑lying hills, and islands such as Ko Lipe and Ko Adang, which are part of the Tarutao National Marine Park. The district’s main waterway is the Pak Phraek River, which flows into the Andaman Sea. The climate is tropical monsoon, with a pronounced rainy season from May to October.
History
The district originated as a minor district (king amphoe) split off from Kantang district. It was subsequently upgraded to full district status, though the precise dates of these administrative changes vary among sources. The area has historically been involved in fishing, agriculture, and rubber cultivation.
Administration
Sikao is divided into six sub‑districts (tambons), which are further subdivided into a total of 63 villages (mubans). The district’s administrative center is the township (thesaban tambon) of Sikao, which covers part of the tambon Sikao.
Economy
The local economy is diversified:
- Agriculture – Rubber, oil palm, and fruit orchards are significant contributors.
- Fisheries – The coastal location supports marine fishing and aquaculture.
- Tourism – The islands of Ko Lipe, Ko Adang, and other marine parks attract both domestic and international tourists, providing income through hospitality and related services.
- Transport and logistics – A deep‑water port project has been planned for the district to serve as a hub for maritime trade, although implementation status varies.
Transportation
Road 4 (the Southern Route) passes through the district, linking it to other parts of Trang Province and the broader southern Thai road network. The district is also served by the Sikhothai Airport (commonly referred to as Sikao Airport), a small domestic airport facilitating access to the coastal and island attractions. Ferry services operate from the district’s coastal piers to nearby islands.
Demographics
According to data from the Department of Provincial Administration, the district’s population was estimated at approximately 40 000 residents in the early 2020s. The populace is composed mainly of ethnic Thais, with minority communities of Chinese descent and Burmese migrants who work in agriculture and fisheries.
Education and Health
Sikao district hosts several primary and secondary schools administered by the Office of the Basic Education Commission. Health services are provided by the Sikao District Hospital and a network of community health centers.
