Geography
Siguatepeque is a municipality and city in the Comayagua Department of central Honduras. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,067 meters (3,500 feet) above sea level, on the foothills of the Central Mountain Range. The city lies near the junction of the highways connecting the capital, Tegucigalpa, with the northern coastal city of San Pedro Sula, making it a regional transportation hub.
History
The area that now encompasses Siguatepeque was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, primarily of Lenca and Maya descent. The town was formally founded in 1799 during the Spanish colonial period and was named after the indigenous term “Siguate”, meaning “place of the yellow flowers,” combined with the Spanish suffix “-peque,” meaning “small.” In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the town grew as a center for agriculture and trade, benefitting from its strategic location between major cities.
Demographics
According to the 2023 provisional census data released by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) of Honduras, the municipality of Siguatepeque had an estimated population of 115,000 inhabitants. The urban population accounts for roughly 70 % of this total. The demographic composition is primarily Mestizo, with smaller percentages of Indigenous (Lenca), White, and Afro‑Honduran groups.

Siguatepeque’s economy is diversified and includes:
