Sidney Wheelhouse (3 May 1888 – 16 July 1916) was an English footballer who played as a full‑back for clubs including Sheffield United and Grimsby Town. He enlisted in the British Army during the First World War and was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme.
Overview
Born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Wheelhouse began his football career with local amateur sides before signing for Sheffield United in 1908. Although he made limited first‑team appearances for United, he later joined Grimsby Town, where he became a regular defender in the Football League Second Division. His playing style was noted for its reliability and defensive steadiness rather than flamboyance.
With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Wheelhouse joined the British Army, serving as a private in the 8th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was deployed to the Western Front and fought in the Battle of the Somme. On 16 July 1916, Wheelhouse was killed during the offensive near the village of Le Sars. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
