Geography
The Sibalom River is a freshwater river situated on the island of Panay in the Philippines. It flows primarily within the province of Antique, traversing the municipality of Sibalom and adjacent areas before emptying into the Sulu Sea via the coastal town of Pandan. The river’s headwaters arise in the Central Panay Mountain Range, from which it descends through a mix of forested and agricultural landscapes.
Length and Drainage Basin
The river is reported to be approximately 73 kilometres (45 miles) in length, making it one of the longer river systems in Antique province. Its drainage basin covers an estimated area of about 1,200 square kilometres, encompassing portions of the Central Panay Mountain Range and the lowland plains toward the coast.
Ecological Significance
A major portion of the Sibalom River’s headwater region lies within the Sibalom Natural Park, a protected area established in 2000. The park conserves a segment of the river’s watershed and supports a diverse array of flora and fauna, including several endemic and threatened species. The riverine habitats contribute to local biodiversity, serve as spawning grounds for various fish species, and provide ecological services such as water filtration and flood regulation.
Human Use and Settlements
Communities along the Sibalom River rely on its waters for domestic consumption, irrigation, and small‑scale fishing. The river also plays a role in local agriculture, particularly in the cultivation of rice and other crops in the lower reaches of the basin. Infrastructure such as bridges and local roadways cross the river at multiple points, facilitating transport within the municipality.
Conservation and Management
Management of the river’s resources falls under the jurisdiction of the provincial government of Antique, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and the local government units (LGUs) of the municipalities through which the river flows. Efforts have been made to monitor water quality and to promote sustainable land‑use practices within the watershed, especially in the context of the protected status of Sibalom Natural Park.
