Description
Shorea elliptica is a medium to large tropical evergreen tree. Leaves are typically elliptic to oblong, glossy green, and measure 10–25 cm in length. The species produces small, creamy-white flowers arranged in panicles. Fruit is a nut surrounded by a winged samara typical of dipterocarps, facilitating wind dispersal.
Distribution and Habitat
The species is native to Southeast Asia, primarily recorded from lowland dipterocarp forests of Borneo (particularly Sabah and Sarawak) and possibly parts of the Malay Peninsula. It prefers well-drained, humid soils at elevations from sea level up to about 600 m.
Ecology
As a dipterocarp, S. elliptica plays a significant role in forest structure and dynamics. It is a component of the emergent layer, contributing to canopy formation. Its seeds are food for various forest fauna, including birds and small mammals.
Conservation Status
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, Shorea elliptica is assessed as Near Threatened due to habitat loss from logging and conversion to agriculture, although precise population trends are not well documented.
Economic and Cultural Uses
The timber of S. elliptica is moderately heavy and has been utilized locally for construction, plywood, and furniture. Because it is not among the most commercially valuable Shorea species, it faces less intensive harvesting compared with species such as Shorea leprosula or Shorea robusta.
