Shire of Mundubbera

The Shire of Mundubbera was a local government area in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. Centered on the town of Mundubbera, the shire administered a predominantly rural area characterized by agricultural production, particularly fruit growing, citrus, and beef cattle.

Geography
The shire covered an area of approximately 3,000 km² (exact figure varies among sources). It bordered the Shires of Gayndah to the north, Biggenden to the east, and Monto to the west.

History

  • The administrative region that became the Shire of Mundubbera was originally part of larger divisions established under the Divisional Boards Act 1879.
  • It was formally constituted as a separate shire in the early 20th century (sources cite 1913 as the establishment year).
  • The Shire of Mundubbera existed as an independent local government entity until 15 March 2008, when it was amalgamated under the Queensland Government’s local‑government reform. The merger combined the Shires of Mundubbera, Biggenden, Eidsvold, Gayndah, and Monto to form the North Burnett Region.

Demographics
According to the 2006 Australian Census, the Shire of Mundubbera had a population of approximately 1,200 residents, a majority of whom lived in the town of Mundubbera itself.

Economy
The shire’s economy was largely based on primary production:

  • Agriculture: Citrus (especially oranges and mandarins), grapes for wine production, and other horticultural crops.
  • Livestock: Beef cattle and dairy farming.
  • Forestry and timber also contributed to local employment.

Governance
The shire council was headquartered in Mundubbera. The council consisted of an elected mayor and councillors representing various divisions within the shire. Responsibilities included local road maintenance, community services, and land-use planning.

Legacy
Following the 2008 amalgamation, the former shire’s former administrative centre continues to function as a service hub within the North Burnett Region. Historical records and community facilities from the Shire of Mundubbera are maintained by the North Burnett Regional Council.
