The Shire of Flinders is a local government area located in North West Queensland, Australia. Its administrative centre and largest town is Hughenden.
Geography The Shire covers an area of approximately 41,634 square kilometres (16,075 sq mi). It is situated in the vast, largely agricultural and pastoral region of Queensland. The Flinders River, one of Queensland's longest rivers, flows through the Shire, contributing to its name. The landscape is primarily flat to gently undulating, dominated by Mitchell grass downs, which are highly regarded for cattle grazing. The Porcupine Gorge National Park, often referred to as Australia's 'Grand Canyon', is a significant natural feature within the Shire.
History The region's history is closely tied to the pastoral industry, with large sheep and cattle stations established in the late 19th century. The Shire of Flinders was constituted on 11 November 1882, making it one of the earlier local government areas in Queensland. The town of Hughenden developed as a service centre for the surrounding pastoral properties and as a railway hub, connecting the region to the coast. The discovery of fossil remains in the area, particularly around Richmond (a neighbouring Shire), also highlights the deep geological history of the region.
Demographics and Economy The Shire of Flinders is sparsely populated, with its economy predominantly based on agriculture, particularly beef cattle grazing. Other economic activities include limited mining and tourism, largely driven by visitors to the Porcupine Gorge National Park and those interested in the region's unique palaeontological heritage. Hughenden serves as a key service centre for the surrounding pastoral community, providing essential services such as healthcare, education, and retail.
Governance The Shire of Flinders is governed by the Flinders Shire Council, which consists of a Mayor and four Councillors. These representatives are elected for a four-year term. The Council is responsible for local infrastructure, community services, planning, and environmental management within the Shire.
