Demographics

According to the 2006 census of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Shilveh-ye Olya had a population of 212 individuals, comprising 48 families. The population density is low, reflecting its rural character. The inhabitants are predominantly ethnic Kurds, speaking Southern Kurdish dialects, and most are adherents of Shia Islam, with a minority of Sunni Muslims.

History

The name “Olya” (meaning “upper” in Persian) distinguishes the village from the nearby settlement of Shilveh‑ye Sofla (“lower”). Historical records indicate that the area has been inhabited since at least the early Safavid period, though the modern village layout largely dates to the early 20th century when land reforms encouraged the consolidation of smaller hamlets.

Economy

The local economy is based on subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry. Seasonal migration to nearby towns for labor, especially in construction and trade, supplements household incomes. Small-scale handicrafts, particularly Kurdish carpet weaving, are also produced for regional markets.

Infrastructure

  • Transportation: Accessible via a paved road linking it to the county capital, Kermanshah, approximately 25 km to the east.
  • Education: The village contains a primary school serving children up to the sixth grade; secondary education is pursued in larger neighboring towns.
  • Healthcare: A basic health house provides primary medical services; more complex care is available in Kermanshah city.
  • Utilities: Electricity and a municipal water supply were installed in the 1990s; mobile telephone coverage is present, though internet connectivity remains limited.

Climate

Shilveh-ye Olya experiences a semi‑arid climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters. Average annual precipitation is around 380 mm, mostly falling between November and March.
