Shi Yan Ming (born approximately 1964) is a Shaolin Temple martial artist, teacher, and a 34th-generation Shaolin warrior monk. He is widely recognized for founding the USA Shaolin Temple in New York City, serving as its abbot, and for his efforts in promoting Chan Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu in the Western world.
Early Life and Training Born approximately in 1964 in Zhumadian, Henan Province, China, with the birth name Du Yongzhong (杜永忠), Shi Yan Ming's parents sent him to the Shaolin Temple at the age of five or six to escape poverty and famine. He became a disciple of the Venerable Abbot Shi Xing Zheng (释行正), the last abbot of the Shaolin Temple to hold the position before the Cultural Revolution. Under Shi Xing Zheng, he underwent rigorous training in Chan Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu, mastering various martial arts forms, weaponry, and internal cultivation practices.
