Sheldon Antonio Richardson (born November 29, 1990) is an American former professional football player who primarily played as a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). Known for his versatility, strength, and disruptive play along the defensive line, Richardson was a prominent figure for several NFL teams throughout his career.
Early Life and College Career
Richardson was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Gateway Institute of Technology High School, where he was a highly touted defensive lineman. After high school, he initially committed to the University of Missouri but attended the College of the Sequoias for a year before enrolling at Missouri.At the University of Missouri, Richardson quickly became a standout player. As a sophomore in 2011, he recorded 7.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss. In his junior year (2012), he earned First-team All-Big 12 honors, tallying 75 total tackles (10.5 for loss) and 4 sacks. He declared for the NFL Draft after his junior season.
Professional Career
New York Jets
Richardson was selected by the New York Jets in the first round (13th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, playing in all 16 games and starting 15 as a rookie. He recorded 77 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble, earning him the prestigious NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.In his second season (2014), Richardson continued his strong play, registering 68 combined tackles and 8 sacks, which led all defensive linemen in the NFL that year. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection. He remained a key player for the Jets through the 2016 season, demonstrating his ability to play both defensive tackle and defensive end.
Seattle Seahawks
On September 1, 2017, Richardson was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse, a 2018 second-round pick, and a 2018 seventh-round pick. He started all 15 games he played for the Seahawks, recording 44 tackles and 1 sack.Minnesota Vikings
On March 17, 2018, Richardson signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. He had a productive season with the Vikings, starting all 16 games and accumulating 49 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.Cleveland Browns
Richardson signed with the Cleveland Browns on March 13, 2019, agreeing to a three-year contract. He spent two seasons with the Browns, playing a crucial role on their defensive line. In 2020, he contributed to the Browns' run to the playoffs, their first appearance since 2002. He was released by the Browns on April 16, 2021.Minnesota Vikings (Second Stint)
On June 15, 2021, Richardson re-signed with the Minnesota Vikings for his second stint with the team. He played in all 17 games, recording 39 tackles and 2.5 sacks.Seattle Seahawks (Second Stint)
