Shek Wai Kok Estate

Shek Wai Kok Estate is a public rental housing estate located in the Shek Wai Kok area of Tsuen Wan, in the New Territories of Hong Kong. The estate is managed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) and forms part of the government’s public‑housing programme designed to provide affordable accommodation for low‑ and middle‑income families.

Location

The estate sits on reclaimed land on the north‑western shore of Tsuen Wan, bounded by Shek Wai Kok Road, Tai Kok Tsui Road and the Tsuen Wai Line of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR). It is adjacent to the industrial and commercial zones of Tsuen Wan and is served by the nearby Shek Wai Kok MTR station on the Tuen Ma line.

History

  • Development: The estate was developed by the HKHA in the late 1970s as part of a wave of public‑housing projects that expanded the Tsuen Wan new town.
  • Construction period: Residential blocks were constructed between 1977 and 1980.
  • Opening: The first blocks were occupied in 1978, and the estate was fully populated by 1981.

  • Facilities: Within the estate are a commercial centre, several kindergartens and primary schools, a community hall, a public library branch, a wet market, and recreational playgrounds.

Demographics

According to the 2016 by‑census conducted by the Census and Statistics Department, Shek Wai Kok Estate had a resident population of about 18,200 persons. The majority of households were families, with an average household size of 3.1 persons. The median monthly household income was lower than the overall Hong Kong median, reflecting the estate’s low‑income resident base.

Transportation

  • MTR: Shek Wai Kok station (Tuen Ma line) provides rapid rail access to Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the New Territories.

  • Roads: The estate is near major thoroughfares such as Route 3 and the West Kowloon Corridor, facilitating private vehicle access.

Management and Services

The HKHA oversees tenancy contracts, rent collection, and building maintenance. A Residents’ Representative Committee, elected by the tenants, works with the HKHA to address community concerns and organise social activities.

Recent Developments

In recent years, the estate has undergone refurbishment programmes aimed at improving building safety, energy efficiency, and communal facilities. The HKHA has also implemented a “Home‑Improvement Scheme” to assist senior residents with minor repairs and retrofits.
