Sheila Mary Mitchell (24 June 1925 – 4 June 2026) was a British actress and author.
Early Life
Sheila Mitchell was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, England on 24 June 1925. During the Second World War, she served in the Women's Royal Navy Service (WRNS) and worked at Bletchley Park. After the war, she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. She began working for BBC Radio while still a student, and broadcasting remained a substantial part of her career, later moving into recording audio books.
Career
Mitchell worked extensively in theatre, including performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Prospect Theatre Company at the Old Vic, and West End productions alongside actors such as Donald Sinden, John Mills, and Derek Jacobi. Her television credits included Jeeves and Wooster, All Creatures Great and Small, Lillie, Grange Hill, Z Cars, Dr. Finlay's Casebook, and numerous sitcoms. She also appeared in television films such as Present Laughter (1981), Whodunnit? (1982), and A Mind to Murder (1995).
Mitchell began writing late in life, publishing her first book at nearly 95 years of age: H.R.F. Keating: A Life of Crime (2020), a biography of her husband, the crime novelist H. R. F. Keating.
Personal Life and Death
Mitchell met H. R. F. (Harry) Keating while both were working in Swindon—she as a member of the repertory theatre company and he as a newspaper reporter and theatre reviewer. They married in 1953 and had four children. After the birth of their first child in 1955, her acting career was put on hold until the 1970s. Keating died in 2011. Sheila Mitchell died on 4 June 2026, at the age of 100.

Mitchell won the Macavity Award in 2020/21 in the Best Mystery Critical/Biography category from Mystery Readers International for H.R.F. Keating: A Life of Crime.
