Sheikh Hassan Arif is a judge of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.
Early Life and Education
Arif was born on 20 April 1968 to Late Faizur Rahaman and Late Hosne Ara Begum. He completed a Bachelor of Law and an M.S.S. degree from the University of Chittagong. He also completed a second law degree from the University of Wolverhampton.
Career
Arif became a lawyer of the District Courts on 12 October 1995. On 18 January 1998, he became a lawyer of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. He was appointed an additional judge of the High Court Division on 18 April 2010 and was made a permanent judge on 15 April 2012.
Notable Judgments and Cases
- In January 2011, Arif and Justice Md. Imman Ali issued a verdict banning corporal punishment in all educational institutions in Bangladesh.
- In October 2019, Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil declared the government's announcement regarding the minimum age for freedom fighters (veterans of the Bangladesh Liberation War) illegal and unconstitutional.
- On 10 February 2020, Arif and Justice Md Mahmud Hassan banned the playing of card and dice games, and housie in social clubs, ruling these activities constituted illegal gambling.
- In November 2021, Arif and Justice Ahmed Sohel issued a verdict directing a lower court to determine whether the father of Monnujan Sufian, then State Minister of Labour and Employment, was a member of the East Pakistan Central Peace Committee during the Bangladesh Liberation War, following a petition filed by historian Muntassir Mamoon.
- In 2023, Arif commented that five sections of the Cyber Security Act could be used to put journalists in trouble.
