Shahrokh Shah

Definition
Shahrokh Shah (Persian: شاهرخ‌شاه, 1734 – 1796) was an Afsharid monarch who ruled the western part of Khorasan, a region corresponding to present‑day Iran’s Khorasan Province, from 1748 until his death in 1796, with a brief two‑month interruption.

Overview
A grandson of the renowned conqueror Nader Shah, Shahrokh was the son of Reza Qoli Mirza Afshar and Fatemeh Soltan Begom, a Safavid princess. His half‑Safavid ancestry was leveraged to legitimize the Afsharid dynasty after Nader Shah’s assassination in 1747. Initially imprisoned in the fortress of Kalat, Shahrokh was installed as ruler by a coalition of Turkic, Kurdish, and Arab tribal leaders when his predecessor Adel Shah was preoccupied with internal conflicts. After a short overthrow by dissident nobles who placed the Safavid pretender Suleiman II on the throne, Shahrokh was restored and remained in power for the remainder of his life, navigating a period marked by tribal fragmentation and the rise of rival powers such as the Qajars.

Etymology/Origin
The regnal name “Shahrokh” (Persian: شاهرخ) was bestowed by his grandfather Nader Shah in homage to Shah Rukh, the son and designated heir of the Turco‑Mongol ruler Timur. The naming was intended to associate Nader Shah’s lineage with the prestige of Timur’s empire.
