Shahin Dezh

Definition Shahin Dezh (Persian: شاهین‌دژ‎) is a city in and the capital of Shahin Dezh County, West Azerbaijan Province, Iran.

Overview Shahin Dezh is an administrative center located in the southeastern part of Iran's West Azerbaijan Province. It serves as a regional hub for the surrounding rural areas, characterized by its agricultural economy and position within a fertile plain irrigated by local rivers. The city's history reflects the broader regional dynamics of Iran, particularly regarding linguistic and administrative changes during the 20th century.

Etymology/Origin The current name, Shahin Dezh, is Persian. "Shahin" (شاهین) translates to "falcon" or "eagle" (specifically Saker Falcon), and "Dezh" (دژ) means "fortress" or "castle." Thus, Shahin Dezh means "Falcon Fortress" or "Eagle Fortress."

Historically, the city was known as Sayin Qala (صایین قلعه), which is of Turkic origin. In Turkic languages, "Sayin" can mean "beautiful" or "good," and "Qala" means "fortress" or "castle." The name change from Sayin Qala to Shahin Dezh occurred during the Pahlavi era in Iran, part of a broader policy to replace Turkic and other non-Persian place names with Persian equivalents.
