Overview
Located in the north‑central part of Hebei, Shacheng lies approximately 150 km northwest of Beijing and about 80 km northeast of Zhangjiakou. The town is situated on the northern slope of the Yanshan Mountains and benefits from a temperate continental climate, with cold, dry winters and warm, humid summers. As of the latest available census data (2020), Shacheng had a population of roughly 110,000 residents, making it the most populous settlement in Huailai County.

The town’s economy is diversified, with notable strengths in agriculture, viticulture, manufacturing, and logistics. Shacheng is especially renowned for its wine industry; the Great Wall Wine Company, one of China’s largest wine producers, is headquartered there. The presence of the Beijing–Baotou railway line and the G6 Beijing–Lhasa Expressway provides the town with strategic transport connections, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers throughout the region.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Shacheng” translates literally from Mandarin as “Sand City” (沙 sand + 城 city). Historical records suggest that the name derives from the area's sandy soil and loose terrain, which were prominent features during the town’s early settlement period. The exact date of the town’s founding is not precisely documented, but it is known to have existed as a market settlement since at least the Ming dynasty (14th–17th centuries).
