The Severn Estuary (Welsh: Aber Hafren) is the estuary of the River Severn, flowing into the Bristol Channel between South West England (from North Somerset, Bristol, and South Gloucestershire) and South Wales (from Cardiff, Newport, to Monmouthshire). It is the largest example of a coastal plain estuary in the UK, covering an area of approximately 74,000 hectares.
Geography
Definitions of the limits of the Severn Estuary vary. Upstream, the normal tidal limit of the River Severn is at Maisemore Weir (on the West Channel) and Llanthony Weir (on the East Channel), near Gloucester Docks. Downstream, the estuary transitions into the Bristol Channel. A commonly used boundary is a line between Lavernock Point (south of Cardiff) and Sand Point (north of Weston-super-Mare), marked by the islands of Steep Holm and Flat Holm. The estuary is about 2 miles (3.2 km) wide at Aust and about 9 miles (14 km) wide between Cardiff and Weston-super-Mare.
On the north-west (Welsh) side, the rivers Wye and Usk flow into the estuary; on the south-east (English) side, the River Avon joins at Avonmouth. Major settlements on the Welsh side include Cardiff, Newport, and Penarth; on the English side, Avonmouth, Portishead, Clevedon, and Weston-super-Mare.
Tidal Range
The Severn Estuary has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world — approximately 50 feet (15 m) — second only to the Bay of Fundy in Canada, and the highest in Europe. The funnel shape of the estuary, combined with its large tidal range and underlying geology of rock, gravel, and sand, produces strong tidal streams and high turbidity, giving the water a notably brown coloration. During the highest tides, rising water is funnelled up the estuary into the Severn bore, a self-reinforcing solitary wave that travels rapidly upstream against the river current.
Conservation and Protected Status
The estuary is recognised as a wetland area of international importance and is designated as a Ramsar site, a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EC Directive on the conservation of Wild Birds, and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the EU Habitats Directive. Large sections of the intertidal zone are also designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The estuary supports over 10% of the British wintering population of dunlin and is the single most important wintering ground for this species. It also hosts significant numbers of Bewick's swans, European white-fronted geese, wigeon, shelduck, curlew, redshank, ringed plover, and pintail. Seven species of migratory fish pass through the estuary, including Atlantic salmon, sea trout, common eel, sea lamprey, river lamprey, twaite shad, and allis shad.
Habitats
The intertidal zone of mudflats, sandbanks, rocky platforms, and saltmarshes is one of the largest in the UK, covering approximately 9,971 hectares. Key habitats include:
- Atlantic Salt Meadow: The estuary hosts the largest aggregation of saltmarsh in the south and south-west of the UK, covering approximately 1,400 ha.
- Intertidal Mudflats/Sandflats: Covering approximately 20,300 ha — the fourth largest area in a UK estuary.
- Reefs: Extensive areas of biogenic reefs formed by the tube-dwelling worm Sabellaria alveolata.
- Subtidal Sandbanks: Permanently submerged sandy sediments, including the Middle and Welsh Grounds.
Tidal Power
The Severn Estuary has long been a focus for tidal energy schemes due to its high tidal range. Proposals for a Severn Barrage — running approximately 16 km across the Bristol Channel from Lavernock Point to Brean Down — would generate up to 8,640 MW. The UK Government has conducted feasibility studies, but plans have been shelved due to cost issues and environmental concerns. The estuary has the potential to generate up to 5% of the UK's electricity.
Archaeology
The archaeology of the Severn Estuary is richly varied, reflecting the importance of the river for fishing and maritime navigation. The archaeological resource is under threat from natural processes such as coastal erosion, as well as development pressure. Intertidal fishtraps from the medieval period are found at Goldcliff, West Pill, and Caldicott, and a traditional method of fishing for salmon with lave nets is still practised at Black Rock, Portskewett.
Severn Estuary Partnership
The Severn Estuary Partnership (SEP) was established in 1995 as an independent initiative to coordinate the activities of local government, statutory authorities, and interested parties. SEP uses a geographically extended definition of the estuary, beginning at the tidal limit of the River Severn in Gloucester and ending at a line between Hurlestone Point near Minehead and Nash Point in the Vale of Glamorgan.
