It lies on the southeastern shore of the Coral Sea, approximately 525 km north of Brisbane, 115 km north of Bundaberg, and 15 km south of the regional centre of Agnes Water. The town is situated at the mouth of the Boyne River and is bordered to the north by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Pacific Highway (Queensland Highway 2) provides road access to the locality.
History
The name “Seventeen Seventy” commemorates the year 1770, when Captain James Cook, aboard HMS Endeavour, made the first recorded European landing on the Australian mainland at what is now known as the Endeavour River near the present‑day town. The landing occurred on 23 May 1770. The locality was officially named “Seventeen Seventy” in 1967 to reflect this historical event. The area was later developed as a holiday destination and fishing village during the mid‑20th century.
