Description
Sertularia is a genus of marine colonial hydrozoans, commonly referred to as “sea‑feathers.” Colonies are typically composed of slender, often branched stalks (hydrocauli) that bear numerous individual polyps (hydranths) within protective chitinous cups called hydrothecae. Hydrothecae are usually elongated, tubular, and may be smooth or ornamented with ridges or spines, depending on the species. The colonies can range from a few centimeters to over a decimeter in length and are generally attached to hard substrates such as rocks, shells, algae, or anthropogenic structures.
Distribution and Habitat
Members of Sertularia are found in temperate and cold‑water marine environments worldwide. Species occur from intertidal zones down to depths exceeding 200 m, though many are most abundant in the subtidal zone (5–50 m). Geographic records include the North Atlantic (e.g., coasts of Europe and North America), the Mediterranean Sea, the Southern Ocean, and parts of the Southern Hemisphere such as New Zealand and southern Australia.
Life Cycle
Colonial polyps are asexually produced from a founding polyp (the ancestrula) that arises from a planula larva. The colonies grow by budding of new hydrocauli and hydrothecae. Reproduction also involves a medusoid stage in many species, during which gametes are produced. Released gametes give rise to planula larvae that settle and develop into new colonies.
Ecology
Colonies of Sertularia are suspension feeders, capturing planktonic particles with their tentacled hydranths. They provide microhabitat complexity that supports various associated fauna, including small crustaceans, polychaete worms, and other cnidarians. Some species are known to be epibionts on kelp and seagrass leaves. Predators include nudibranchs, pycnogonids (sea spiders), and certain fish that specialize in feeding on hydroids.

- Sertularia cupularis (Linnaeus, 1761): Commonly known as the “cup hydroid,” found throughout the North Atlantic and Mediterranean.
- Sertularia perpusilla (Clava, 1900): Small, delicate colonies typical of boreal waters.
- Sertularia villosa (Mackinnon, 1972): Recognized by its densely hairy hydrothecae; reported from New Zealand waters.
Human Interactions
While Sertularia species are not of direct commercial importance, they can influence fouling communities on submerged structures (e.g., piers, ship hulls). Their presence is sometimes used as an indicator of water quality and biodiversity in marine ecological assessments.
Research Significance
The genus serves as a model for studies on colonial development, polymorphism, and cnidarian life‑history strategies. Molecular phylogenetic work has helped clarify relationships within the family Sertulariidae and the broader order Leptothecata.
