Sertig

The Sertig valley is an alpine valley located in the canton of Grisons (Graubünden) in southeastern Switzerland. It is a side valley of the Landwasser valley, situated south of the well-known resort town of Davos. Renowned for its natural beauty, traditional alpine character, and recreational opportunities, Sertig serves as a popular destination for hikers, nature enthusiasts, and winter sports participants.

Geography The Sertig valley stretches for approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from its confluence with the Landwasser river near Davos Frauenkirch, extending southwards up to the Sertig Pass (Sertigpass). The Sertigbach, a mountain stream, flows through the length of the valley, emptying into the Landwasser. The valley exhibits a characteristic U-shape, indicative of its glacial formation, and is surrounded by peaks of the Albula Alps, including the Mittagshorn and offering views towards the Piz Kesch massif. The upper reaches of the valley transition into high-alpine terrain, leading to the Sertig Pass, which connects the Sertig valley with the Val Susauna in the Engadin region.

Settlements The most notable settlement within the valley is Sertig Dörfli, a small, picturesque hamlet situated at an elevation of approximately 1,861 meters (6,106 feet) above sea level. This traditional village comprises a few historic Walser-style houses, a small, distinctive church (Kirche Sertig), and several mountain inns. The hamlet has largely preserved its authentic alpine character and serves as a focal point for visitors to the valley.

Tourism and Activities Sertig is a popular destination for nature and outdoor recreation throughout the year.

  • Summer: During the summer months, the valley is a prime area for hiking, mountaineering, and trail running. Numerous well-marked trails traverse the valley, leading to surrounding peaks, alpine meadows, and pristine mountain lakes. The hike to the Sertig Pass is a classic route, offering panoramic views of the surrounding alpine landscape.
  • Winter: In winter, the valley transforms into a snow-covered landscape ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking. A prepared cross-country ski track often runs through the lower parts of the valley, attracting both local residents and tourists.
  • Accessibility: The valley is readily accessible by road from Davos, and public transport (bus) services operate regularly to Sertig Dörfli, particularly during the peak summer and winter seasons, providing convenient access for visitors.

Ecological Significance The Sertig valley forms an integral part of the larger alpine ecosystem. Its largely untouched natural environment provides diverse habitats for a variety of flora and fauna typical of the high Alps. Efforts are made to preserve the valley's pristine ecological value and biodiversity, contributing to its appeal as a natural haven.
