Sergio Véjar

Sergio Véjar (1928–2009) was a Mexican cinematographer, film director, and screenwriter who contributed extensively to the Mexican film industry throughout the mid-to-late 20th century. Born on October 11, 1928, in Colima, Mexico, he began his career in the technical sectors of filmmaking before transitioning into directing.

Véjar is recognized for his prolific output, having directed more than 40 feature films and served as the cinematographer for dozens more. He began his professional life in the 1950s, working as a camera operator and director of photography during the later years of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. His work as a cinematographer is noted for its technical precision and adaptation to various genres, including drama and ranchera films.

As a director, Véjar often explored themes of social dynamics, youth culture, and domestic life. One of his most notable directorial works is Los adolescentes (1968), which received critical attention for its portrayal of contemporary youth issues. His filmography also includes titles such as La trenza (1975) and La casa del pelícano (1978).

Throughout his career, Véjar participated in the transition of Mexican cinema from traditional studio productions to more independent and modern narratives. He remained active in the industry until the early 2000s. Sergio Véjar died on March 15, 2009, in Mexico City, leaving behind a legacy as a versatile filmmaker who bridged the gap between technical craftsmanship and creative direction.
