Definition
The Second Beel cabinet (Dutch: Tweede kabinet‑Beel) was the 48th cabinet of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, headed by Prime Minister Louis Beel. It functioned as a caretaker government from 22 December 1958 until 19 May 1959.
Overview
The cabinet was formed after the resignation of the Drees III cabinet, which had lost its parliamentary majority. As a short‑lived interim administration, the Second Beel cabinet’s primary purpose was to maintain governmental continuity while new coalition negotiations were underway. It was succeeded by the De Quay cabinet on 19 May 1959.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Beel” derives from Louis Beel (1902–1977), a Dutch civil servant and politician of the Catholic People’s Party (KVP) who served as Prime Minister twice. Dutch cabinets are traditionally named after the serving prime minister; the qualifier “Second” distinguishes this term from his earlier tenure as head of the First Beel cabinet (1946–1948).
