Sde Dov Airport

Definition Sde Dov Airport, also known as Dov Hoz Airport, was a former civil airport located on the northern coast of Tel Aviv, Israel. It primarily served domestic flights within Israel.

Overview Sde Dov Airport was one of Tel Aviv's two airports, the other being Ben Gurion Airport (formerly Lod Airport), which handles international and some domestic traffic. Sde Dov was established in the 1930s and played a crucial role in connecting Tel Aviv with other parts of Israel, particularly Eilat in the south and the Galilee region in the north. For decades, it served as a primary hub for Israeli domestic airlines such as Arkia Israeli Airlines and Israir Airlines. The airport's location within the city limits made it convenient for local travel but also subject to increasing pressure for urban development as Tel Aviv expanded. After extensive debate and planning, Sde Dov Airport ceased operations on July 1, 2019, with its domestic flights largely redirected to Ben Gurion Airport. The land it occupied is now slated for residential and commercial development.

Etymology/Origin The airport was named after Dov Hoz (1894–1940), a prominent figure in the history of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Mandatory Palestine), a pioneer of Jewish aviation, and one of the founders of the Haganah paramilitary organization. Hoz was a strong advocate for the development of a local Jewish air service and played a significant role in establishing the first Jewish aviation initiatives in Palestine. The airport was established during the British Mandate period, in the late 1930s.

Characteristics Sde Dov Airport featured a single asphalt runway (03/21) and a compact terminal facility designed to handle domestic passenger and cargo traffic. Due to its relatively short runway and proximity to urban areas, it was primarily serviced by turboprop aircraft and smaller regional jets suitable for short-haul domestic routes. Its coastal location, offering views of the Mediterranean Sea during takeoff and landing, was a notable feature. The airport was known for its quick turnaround times and ease of access compared to the larger Ben Gurion Airport, making it a preferred choice for many domestic travelers.
