Screwgun Records is an American independent record label primarily focused on avant-garde jazz and improvised music. It was founded in 1996 by saxophonist and composer Tim Berne. The label was established to provide Berne with complete creative control over his recordings and to serve as a platform for his various ensembles and collaborators.
The label's catalog consists largely of Berne’s own projects, including recordings by groups such as Bloodcount, Big Satan, and Paraphrase. It has also released works featuring prominent figures in the creative music scene, such as guitarist Marc Ducret, keyboardist Craig Taborn, and drummer Tom Rainey. Many of the label's releases are live recordings or multi-disc sets that document extended improvisations and complex compositions.
Screwgun Records is noted for its distinct visual aesthetic, which is defined by the artwork and graphic design of artist Steve Byram. The collaboration between Berne and Byram has resulted in a consistent and recognizable brand identity characterized by idiosyncratic, non-traditional album packaging and abstract imagery.
While initially operating through traditional physical distribution, the label transitioned its business model to focus more on direct-to-consumer sales and digital platforms as the music industry evolved. It remains a significant entity in the documentation of the New York downtown jazz scene and contemporary experimental music.
