Scott Butera

Scott Butera is an American business executive and former public official, known for his leadership roles in the gaming and hospitality industries. He has served as chief executive officer (CEO) of multiple casino operators and held a senior position within the United States Department of the Treasury.

Early life and education
Butera was born in 1964. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Career

Government service
From 2009 to 2011, Butera was appointed by President Barack Obama as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Services at the United States Department of the Treasury. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing policies related to the financial services sector, including banking and securities regulation.

Gaming and hospitality
After leaving the Treasury, Butera entered the casino industry. He served as the chief executive officer of Tropicana Entertainment, a publicly traded casino operator, from 2011 until its acquisition in 2018. Following the acquisition, he became the CEO of Caesars Entertainment’s casino operations in Atlantic City, New York, and other regional markets.

In 2021, Butera was appointed president and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas-based entertainment and hospitality firm, The Boardwalk, overseeing its development projects and strategic initiatives.

Board memberships and affiliations
Butera has held positions on the boards of several organizations, including the National Association of Gaming Commissioners and the International Association of Gaming Regulators. He is also a member of the American Gaming Association’s executive committee.
