The School of Airborne Troops (French: École des Troupes Aéroportées, ETAP) is the primary training institution for airborne forces of the French Army. Located in Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France, ETAP is responsible for the theoretical and practical instruction of all French military personnel designated for airborne operations, as well as personnel from allied nations.
History ETAP was officially established in 1964, consolidating various pre-existing airborne training centres that emerged after World War II. The need for a centralized, standardized training facility became apparent as France developed its paratrooper capabilities. Its roots can be traced to early airborne units and training initiatives in the 1940s and 1950s, which were crucial during conflicts such as the Indochina War and the Algerian War. The school inherited the rich traditions and operational experience of French paratroopers.
Mission and Training The core mission of ETAP is to train and qualify military personnel in all aspects of airborne operations. This includes:
- Basic Parachuting: Instruction in static-line jumping techniques for all future paratroopers, leading to the award of the French Parachutist Badge.
- Advanced Parachuting: Specialized courses such as High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) and High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) freefall techniques for special forces, reconnaissance units, and other specialized personnel.
- Jumpmaster Training: Qualifying personnel to oversee and command parachute jumps, ensuring safety and tactical effectiveness.
- Parachute Maintenance and Packing: Training technicians in the inspection, maintenance, and packing of parachutes and associated equipment.
- Commando and Airborne Operations: Developing skills for combat in an airborne environment, including tactical deployment, landing zone security, and related commando techniques.
- Medical Aspects of Parachuting: Training in aeromedical support for airborne operations, including parachute descent injuries and first aid in the field.
ETAP sets the doctrine and standards for airborne training across the French armed forces and also provides training for personnel from various foreign armies, fostering international cooperation and interoperability.
Location The school is situated at Pau-Uzein Air Base (Base Aérienne 120 Commandante Dorange et Capitaine Daron) in Pau, southwestern France. This location is chosen for its geographical features and generally favorable weather conditions, which are conducive to frequent parachuting operations.
Significance As the sole institution responsible for airborne instruction in France, ETAP plays a critical role in maintaining the readiness and capabilities of the French Army's airborne brigades (such as the 11th Parachute Brigade) and special forces. It is the custodian of French airborne tradition and expertise, ensuring that all paratroopers are trained to a consistent and high standard, ready for deployment in diverse operational theaters worldwide.
