Schleswig Air Base

Overview

Schleswig Air Base (German: Fliegerhorst Schleswig), also widely known as Jagel Air Base due to its proximity to the municipality of Jagel, is a major military air base of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) and German Navy (Marine). It is located near Schleswig in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) south of the city of Schleswig. Strategically positioned in northern Germany, the base serves as a critical hub for reconnaissance and maritime patrol operations.

History

The origins of Schleswig Air Base trace back to the mid-1930s when construction for an airfield began during the rearmament phase of the German Third Reich. Throughout World War II, it operated as an important airfield for the Luftwaffe. Following the war, the base was briefly utilized by Allied forces, including the Royal Air Force, before being returned to German control in the late 1950s with the establishment of the West German Bundeswehr.

For many decades, Schleswig Air Base was primarily associated with aerial reconnaissance. It famously served as the home of Aufklärungsgeschwader 51 "Immelmann" (Reconnaissance Wing 51 "Immelmann"), which operated various reconnaissance aircraft, including the McDonnell Douglas RF-4E Phantom II and later the Panavia Tornado in its reconnaissance variant. The wing played a significant role in NATO's intelligence-gathering capabilities during the Cold War and beyond.

Current Operations

Schleswig Air Base remains an active and vital military installation, hosting both German Air Force and German Navy units:

  • Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 51 "Immelmann" (TLG 51 "I"): This tactical air wing, descended from the historic reconnaissance wing, has undergone transformations in its roles and aircraft. While it historically operated the Panavia Tornado, it is now adapting to new operational requirements, including the integration and operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and other advanced reconnaissance platforms.
  • Marinefliegergeschwader 5 (MFG 5): A key unit of the German Navy's Naval Air Wing 5, responsible for maritime patrol and reconnaissance. MFG 5 currently operates the Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft. These aircraft are critical for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), surface surveillance, search and rescue (SAR) missions, and maritime intelligence gathering over the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The P-3C Orions are scheduled to be replaced by the more advanced Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft in the coming years, further enhancing the base's capabilities in naval aviation.

Infrastructure

The air base features a modern and extensive runway system capable of accommodating a wide range of military aircraft, from fighter jets to large transport and maritime patrol planes. It also includes comprehensive hangar facilities, maintenance workshops, logistical support infrastructure, administrative buildings, and accommodation for military personnel. These facilities support the continuous flight operations and readiness of the resident units.
